After the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series charter agreement was made public, many fans have come to the aide of 23XI Racing co-owners Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, who continue to battle NASCAR in an ongoing legal matter. The release of the charter agreement as a public record is the latest development in the fight between the sport and the race teams.
The charter agreement going public was brought to light by motorsports reporter Bob Pockrass. The racing insider took to X with screenshots of the charter agreement and stated that teams get a “base” of $141,000 per NASCAR Cup race. Here’s what Pockrass wrote:
“The 2025 charter agreement is now a public record. Charter teams get a base $141,000 per event.”
Many fans took the time to acknowledge the grips of Hamlin and company, who are suing the sport over alleged monopolistic practices. One fan was left knowing why teams lose money by the end of every season, writing:
“So 5 million a year, when a single car costs around a million (per Denny’s podcast) and they have to have at least 3 cars, thats 3 million gone on just the cars, not account tires, which I’ve heard can be up to 25k a race (so another million). No wonder they say they lose money”
Another fan believes the way the money is distributed is a testament to why teams have to run various sponsors throughout the season, instead of sticking to a few. They wrote:
“No wonder teams don’t keep one sponsor on the car all year. They basically have to nickel and dime their way through the season. I wonder how bad the financials are for some of the smaller teams that have to fight and claw for every dollar.”
Another fan chimed in that the teams are getting so little money, one bad race could hinder the next four races. They wrote:
“lol the teams are getting nothing, 1 big crash and your losing your money for the next 4 races”
Denny Hamlin racing for first Cup championship amid ongoing lawsuit
Amid the ongoing legal proceedings off the racetrack, Denny Hamlin is competing for NASCAR’s biggest prize once again this Sunday at the Phoenix Raceway. In his 21st full-time season of NASCAR Cup Series racing, the driver of the #11 is still seeking his first Cup championship.
Denny Hamlin will compete against Kyle Larson, William Byron, and Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Chase Briscoe for the championship. It’s Hamlin’s first appearance in the Championship 4 since 2021 and his fifth appearance overall.
Hamlin has a series-high six victories in 2021, including Las Vegas, which was his 60th career win and punched his ticket to the Championship 4.
